Iman's Turkey Burger Recipe

These flavorful burgers are one of Iman's family faves.
Iman's Turkey Burger Recipe

Makes: 4 servings
Prep: 15 minutes
Grill: 8 to 10 minutes
Cook: 8 minutes

Burgers:
1 package (1.3 pounds) ground turkey
1 large shallot, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
4 slices sharp Vermont cheddar cheese

Topping:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium red onion, peeled and thinly sliced
8 ounces sliced mushrooms
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Focaccia or hearty whole-grain bread, sliced
Mustard or mayonnaise, if desired

  1. Burgers: In a bowl, mix together turkey, shallot, garlic, lemon juice, thyme, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 patties, each about 4 inches in diameter. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Heat an outdoor grill or stovetop grill pan to medium-high heat. Coat with cooking spray and grill burgers 4 to 5 minutes per side, covering halfway through cooking, until internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F. on an instant-read thermometer. Add a slice of cheese to each burger and let melt.
  3. Topping: While burgers are grilling, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and mushrooms and saute for 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown. Season with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  4. Serve burger on grilled focaccia or whole-grain bread, spread with mustard or mayonnaise if desired. Top with sauteed onions and mushrooms.
