New to the city is the High Line, a park that opened on the West Side last year on abandoned elevated train tracks from the 1930s. It spans nine blocks—but more sections are being added—and is filled with wooden benches, lounge chairs, public art, and beautiful native plants growing between exposed tracks. There are spectacular views of the Hudson River and downtown. On Tuesdays during the summer, free fitness classes are offered and telescopes are set up for stargazing lessons. Chelsea Market, built within the former Nabisco factory complex, is home to the Food Network, as well as a variety of dessert shops, restaurants, and clothing boutiques. We stop for a bite to eat after all the walking—it's our neighborhood food mecca.
