How to Start a Vegetable Garden

How to plant a vegetable garden

What Soil to Use
Give your vegetables a happy home by filling the raised bed with a great soil mix. Do not use earth from your yard—chances are it's too heavy or sandy or acidic. For a 4-x-4-foot bed, you can expect to pay about $40 for the entire mix. You'll need:
six 40-pound bags of topsoil
three 40-pound bags of compost
one 3.8-cubic-foot bale sphagnum peat moss

How to Plant
For a neater look, plant in patches instead of rows. Sprinkle seeds and cover lightly with soil. Keep moist. Within days you'll see sprouts. Check seed packets for tending how-tos. Water regularly, but don't overdo it.
