I've always liked the exotic quality of cane furniture, even though most of what I see in thrift shops seems fussy and old-fashioned. So when I spotted a sad-but-sophisticated cane-back dining chair for cheap, I pounced. Although it easily could have been perked up with sanding and a dark stain, I opted for a sunny paint job and bold floral-pattern fabric for the seat cushion. This makeover is doable in a weekend.
