    The Dining Room

"I'm not a fancy dinner person so I wanted the dining room to have a funky feel," Jamie says. Her passion for intense shades inspired the black walls as a backdrop for vivid multistriped fabric on the chairs and bench. A retro chandelier adds a bold touch.

    The Family Area

Jamie slipcovered the sofa in the family area with white denim ("easy to throw in the washer") and layered on the orange, a shade she loves. "My girlfriends and I once styled an empty house with flea market finds and sold everything off," she says. "Except for the Orangina poster, which I kept."

    Jake's Room

Jake asked for an orange room, his favorite hue. "I guess he gets that from me," says Jamie. "I like smaller rooms with saturated shades as a focal point." Beadboard wainscoting gives each of the upstairs bedrooms a laid-back vibe and softens the strong colors.

    Sydney's Room

Jamie created a grown-up look for Sydney's room, using her tried-and-true three-color formula: two corresponding shades, here pink and blue, "then throw in something unexpected like apple green to bring the outside in," she says. A black-and-white portrait of Jamie and her mom hangs on the wall.

    Jamie's Bedroom

Pale blue walls and white linens make Jamie's bedroom a cool, calm retreat. A needlepoint wall hanging and a patterned bench inject playful notes.

    Jamie's Signature Essentials

A few fundamental basics for creating a stellar look:

    — Clean every room from top to bottom until it's sparkling. Use only unscented room fresheners.

    — Study the flow of the house—pare down so that rooms aren't crowded and try different seating arrangements until you get the best fit.

    — Organize, organize. Put as much as you can out of sight in bins or baskets with labels. Use trays in the kitchen to house frequently used items like napkins and in the bath for soaps and cotton balls.

    — Decorate to make your home pretty and inviting, not fussy. Display only a couple of well-placed vases or collectibles.
