New York event planner David Stark knows how to throw an unforgettable bash. After 20 years of merrymaking for top companies, museums and celebrities, he's finally spilling his secrets in his latest book, The Art of the Party (The Monacelli Press). And because he's a designer with great style, we chatted up Stark for a few of his favorite decorating ideas.
"I love mixing big, fat wide stripes with pencil- skinny lines as well as every width in between," says Stark.
Stark suggests painting a hallway or accent wall a dark shade to make nearby rooms appear brighter and airier by comparison.
For an instant pick-me-up, Stark suggests sticking one or two poppies in a simple glass bottle.
"Cloches and bell jars look beautiful on coffee tables and bookshelves," says Stark. When entertaining, fill with fresh fruit to create a decorative focal point. Glass Cloche, worldmarket.com, $20 for medium, $25 for large
"I'm obsessed with vintage floor lamps that twist, bend and turn. PB Teen has a desk-size dead ringer for the midcentury French originals." Hi-Light Task Lamp in Pool, pbteen.com, $79
Oversize geometric cement tiles add graphic punch to a kitchen or bathroom floor.
Stark's product pick: Vegas 914B tile, granadatile.com, $8 per tile
"I've had a long love affair with Benjamin Moore's Black Bean Soup for interior or exterior walls," says Stark. "Accent with Lizard Green doors."
