Kitchen Basics: How to Make French Toast

Our foolproof way to prepare a brunch classic.

Step 1
Butter an electric griddle and heat to 350°. In a pinch, a nonstick skillet or stovetop griddle works too.

Step 2
Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla and salt in a shallow dish.

Step 3
Cut bread into 3/4-inch-thick slices (about 12 for a 1-pound loaf).

Step 4
Place bread in egg mixture. Flip over and gently press into liquid.

Step 5
Lift slices from liquid and transfer to heated griddle. Cook 2 minutes. Flip; cook 2 more minutes.
