Welcome to Family Circles Kitchen Basics. Today, I'm gonna show you how to make French Toast from scratch right at home. For this dish, I like to use Hula bread, but if you can't find it, any other egg bread will work just as well. What's nice about it is that it's got a substantial enough texture to absorb the egg mixture while still keeping it tender inside. First, cut the bread into about 3/4-inch thick slices. Next, you're gonna crack 6 eggs into a shallow dish. You whisk in 1 cup of milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and just a pinch of salt. Butter in electric griddle and heat to 350 degrees or place a large nonstick skillet with 1 tablespoon butter over medium heat. Place 2 to 4 pieces of the bread into the egg mixture depending on how many pieces your pan can hold. Flip over and press gently into the liquid. Lift the bread from the pan, letting the excess egg mixture drip back into the dish. Place on the heated griddle and cook about 2 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Flip over the toast and cook another 2 minutes until the bottom side is brown and the centers are set. Place the cooked French toast on a platter or keep warm in a 200-degree oven until all the sizes are cooked. Dust with confectioner sugar or served with butter and maple syrup.
