It’s time to rethink what a picnic can be. There’s not a traditional sandwich or salad to be found in this Mediterranean-style mix. And no paper plates or napkins, either: We’ve gathered gear that lets you set an equally stylish scene wherever you settle in.

Corkcicle’s Dipped Canteen (above) is a cool way to carry wine and eliminates the risk of a glass bottle breaking. For your picnic pleasure, may we suggest:

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc
Bright, citrusy and a perfect complement to our tangy chicken salad. $18

Cape Mentelle Rosé
Lush rosé makes hummus taste even more rich and creamy. $18

“Summer Picnic” by Spotify is a 40-song playlist with a just-right energy level. It gets things going with Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” and includes Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” plus “Sunny Afternoon” by The Kinks. Worth a listen!

FC staffer Caroline Mullen shares 5 faves from her personal summer playlist:

Jack Johnson

The Ants!

Q: Is putting up with ants the price we have to pay for picnicking?

A: Keep ants from crashing your picnic by surrounding the area with a generous border of sprinkled cornstarch or baby powder—makes it harder for them to invade. Or bring a spray bottle filled with a 50-50 white vinegar-water mix and spritz a ring around the edge of your blanket. The vinegar smell is a natural repellent and interrupts the scent trail ants typically follow.

For the Vegetarians

Platters and Boards book by Shelly Westerhausen

Vegetarian Ventures food blogger Shelly Westerhausen (self-proclaimed lover of chai-flavored anything) has a new book called Platters and Boards—it has tons of ideas for casual get-togethers. The Eggplant-Walnut Paté in her Park Picnic Spread is a baguette’s dream come true.

To make:

Roast 1 large eggplant. When cool, scrape out flesh and whirl in high-speed blender or food processor with 1 cup toasted walnut halves, 1 clove garlic and 1 tsp paprika. Stream in 1 tbsp olive oil and

process until smooth, no lumps remaining. Season with sea salt and black pepper.
Can be made up to 2 days ahead and stored
in an airtight container in the fridge.

The Coolest Cooler

Not only does this 55-quart cooler have extra-wide rubber tires to make hauling stuff a breeze, it has built-in everything: ice-crushing blender, bottle opener, splash-proof speaker, USB charger, knife and cutting board and more. Fewer things to remember to pack! coolest.com, $400

The best way to pack any cooler:

  • Start with a layer of ice on bottom.
  • Pre-chill food and drinks to help ice stay cold.
  • When you arrive at your destination, position the cooler out of direct sunlight. Ideally, shade is best.
