Knitting Abbreviations

cont: continue.

garter st: K every row.

rem: remaining.

RS: right side.

SK2P: Slip one st, knit 2 together, pass slip st over k2tog.

ssk: (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 stitches knitwise, one at a time, to right-hand needle. Insert tip of left-hand needle into front of these stitches from left to right. Knit them together.

St st: (Stockinette st) K 1 row, p 1 row. When working with circular needles in rounds, k every row.

tbl: through the back loop.

tog: together.

WS: wrong side.

Note: Use separate balls of yarn for each color block. Be sure to twist yarns around each other on wrong side when changing colors to prevent holes.

Patchwork Sweater

You need: Chunky Tweed by Rowan Yarns* 3.5oz/100g hanks: 2 each of black #880 (A), olive #953 (B) and brown #950 (C); 1 hank each in lt blue #952 (D), plum #887 (F) and navy #888 (G); 1 (1, 2) hanks in orange #954 (E); one pair each sizes 10 and 10 1/2 (6 and 6.5mm) needles or size to obtain gauge; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 12 sts and 17 rows = 4" over St st using larger needles. TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

Note: Read RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right. Be sure to twist yarns around each other when changing colors to prevent holes. Chart for front and back is drawn without selvage sts. Therefore, st counts in instructions reflect two extra sts used for selvedges but not shown on chart. Keep first and last sts on needle as selvage sts worked garter st and in colors of chart.

Back: With smaller needles and A, cast on 68 (72, 76) sts. K 1 row, p 1 row. Change to larger needles. Beg chart pat: Row 1 (WS): With F k1 (selvage st), p16 (18, 20), with B p34, with D p16 (18, 20), k1 (selvage st). Cont to work in this way foll chart, dec 1 st each side every 18th row 4 times —60 (64, 68) sts. Work even for 6 rows more. Raglan armhole shaping: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec row (RS) K4, k3tog, k to last 7 sts, SK2P, k4. Work 3 rows even. Rep last 4 rows 4 (5, 6) times more. Work dec row on next row, then every other row 3 times more. Work 1 row even, then bind off rem 18 sts.

Front: Work as for back foll chart to neck shaping. Next row (RS) Bind off center 4 sts. Working both sides at once, work 1 row even, then dec 1 st at each neck edge on next row. Work 1 row even. Bind off rem 6 sts each side to shape neck.

Left Sleeve: With smaller needles and A, cast on 27 (29, 31) sts. K 1 row, p 1 row. Change to larger needles and D. Working in St st, work 33 rows D, 30 rows E, 26 rows G and rem of sleeve with C. AT SAME TIME, inc 1 st each side (inside of selvage sts) every 6th row 10 (11, 12) times—47 (51, 55) sts. Work even until there are same number of rows (16 rows) in 3rd color block in G as on back.

Raglan cap shaping: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec row (RS) K3, k3tog, k to last 6 sts, SK2P, k3. Rep dec row every 4th row 7 (8, 9) times more—15 sts. Work even for 1 row (or until sleeve fits back or front armhole). Bind off.

Right Sleeve: Work as for left sleeve foll this color sequence: 33 rows F, 30 rows C, 26 rows B and rem of sleeve with E.

Finishing: Block pieces to measurements. Sew sleeves into armholes leaving one seam open. Collar: With smaller needles and A, pick up and k 63 sts evenly around neck edge. Work in k1, p1 rib for 1 1/2". Change to larger needles and work in rib for 1 1/2" more. Bind off in rib. Sew other raglan seam and collar. Sew side and sleeve seams.

Pillows

Geometric Pillows:

Square pillows: 14" x 14"

Triangle pillow: 14" wide x 14" tall

You need: Bazic Wool by Classic Elite* 1.75oz/50g balls: For square pillow: 1 ball each in antique olive #2950 (A) and aqua ice #2972 or suede 32945 (B); 14" x 14" pillow form.

For triangle pillow: 1 ball each in antique olive #2950 (A) and barn red #2958 (B); fiberfill.

For all: size 8 (5mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 16 sts and 20 rows = 4" in St st. TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

Square pillow:

Work in same manner as first square pillow reversing garter st and St st placements. Work pillow in garter st and center square in St st.

Triangle Pillow:

Front: With A, cast on 56 sts. Work in garter stitch for 16 rows. AT SAME TIME, decrease 1 st at each side edge on Rows 2, 5, 7, 10, 12, and 15—44 sts remain. Row 17 (RS): With A k2tog, k11, join ball of B and k18, join new ball of A and k11, k2tog. Row 18 (WS): With A k12, with B p18, with A k12. Row 19: With A k12, with B k18, with A k12. Row 20: With A k12, with B p2tog, p14, p2togtbl, with A k12. Row 21: With A k12, with B k16, with A k12. Row 22: With A k12, with B p2tog, p12, p2togtbl, with A k12. Row 23: With A k12, with B k14, with A k12. Row 24: With A k12, with B p14, with A k12. Row 25: With A k12, with B ssk, k10, k2tog, with A k12. Row 26: With A k12, with B p12, with A k12. Next row (WS): K3 tog. Fasten off. Work second side in same manner, reversing color and st placement so center triangle is done in garter st and border in St st. Work ssk instead of p2tog and k2tog instead of p2togtbl.

Finishing: Sew pillow front and back pieces together along two edges. Stuff firmly with fiberfill. Sew final seam closed.

Artful Tote

Tote: 12" wide x 14" tall:

You need: La Gran Mohair by Classic Elite* 1.5oz/42g balls: 2 balls in green mountain #6512 (A), 1 ball each in blue spruce #6562 (B), lapis #6530(C), bruised eggplant #6552 (D), nutmeg #6547(E), and caramel #6551(F); size 8 (5mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge; tapestry needle; felt fabric; tortoise shell handle.

Gauge: 16 sts and 24 rows = 4" in St st. TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

Tote Panel (make two): With A, cast on 48 sts. Work in St st following chart. Read RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right. Be sure to twist yarns around each other on wrong side when changing colors to prevent holes. When all rows of chart have been worked, bind off with A.

Finishing: Cut two pieces of felt to same dimensions as tote pieces, adding 1/2" all around for seam allowance. Sew pieces together along side and bottom edges with 1/2" seam allowance for lining. With tapestry needle and A, sew knit panels together at sides and bottom. Slip lining into tote bag and, trimming away excess felt, sew together along top edge. Center handle along top edge and sew to tote with tapestry needle and A.
