Celebrate the universal birthday for rescue pups.

By Danielle Blundell

Now, here's a holiday we can fully get behind! In 2008 the North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization, declared August 1 of every year as DOGust, the universal birthday for shelter dogs. When a puppy comes in, all a shelter can do is guess at his or her approximate age, since the actual birth date for the majority of animals is unknown. This year, our friends at Bounty got in on the action and donated $10,000 to the shelter and 500 rolls of paper towel, because, let's face it, when there are puppies and birthdays, there are bound to be messes to clean up.

If you've got a rescue at home, celebrate him today by making this dog-friendly "pupcake" recipe created by mom, lifestyle blogger and rescue dog owner Crystal VanTassel-Lopez of Crystal & Co. Here's a link to the recipe.

And don't forget to head over to the North Shore Animal League America to learn more about adopting an animal.
