If you're considering adopting a cat or dog, August 15 might be the perfect day to do it.

Pet lovers, hold on to your hats: On Saturday, August 15, animal shelters nationwide are waiving adoption fees.

Yes, you read that right. For one day at hundreds of participating shelters around the country, you can take home a cat or dog for no or low cost. It's part of an effort called Clear the Shelters, which aims to give thousands of homeless animals a loving family to call their own. NBC and Telemundo stations will be covering Clear the Shelters with promotions and even live adoption drives—tune in to your local station to check it out! You can also follow the campaign on social media with the hashtag #CleartheShelters.

Adopting pets from shelters is important: You're saving an animal from a life of homelessness, hunger and hardship. According to the ASPCA, 7.6 million companion animals (think cats and dogs) enter shelters every year, yet only 2.7 million of them are adopted. Along with taking care of animals' critical health needs, shelters help socialize cats and dogs before they're adopted, which means they're house-trained and people-friendly by the time they come to your arms. Plus, rescued animals make very loving, grateful companions.

Of course, adopting a dog or cat is a big responsibility, even without the adoption fees. But if it's the right decision for your family, this weekend is a great time to take the plunge. To find a participating shelter near you, visit
