We Tested Them: Here Are the Best Bed Sheets You Can Buy

With the amount of luxury sheet brands on the market, it’s hard to decipher which ones are really worth your (hopefully!) full eight hours. Our Family Circle editors did the dirty work for you (because testing luxury sheets is such a drag) and judged each set of sheets on price, general fit, softness, breathability, and shrinkage. Here, we’ve rounded up the sheets you’ll want to hit snooze for, from priciest to least.

Parachute Sateen

Queen Set: 2 pillowcases, top sheet, and fitted sheet

  • General fit—Fit quite well, if anything a little loose.
  • Softness—These sheets are incredibly soft, while still keeping me cool. The sateen material is comfortable and luxurious at the same time. The one complaint I have is that my nails and jewelry sometimes catch on the fabric, but it hasn’t actually caused a snag, so that’s good. After washing, they really didn’t change in softness, but I didn’t care. I’m guessing they’ll get softer over time.
  • Breathability—I once had sheets that were jersey cotton material, and I’d wake up sweating—but not with these.
  • Shrinkage—No shrinking and minimal wrinkles.

Queen Set: 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, 2 pillowcases, and a reusable laundry bag for storage

  • General fit—The fit is just right.
  • Softness—They were pretty soft in the package and soft after the wash too, and I appreciate that it’s made out of fair-trade cotton.
  • Breathability—Didn’t feel sweaty or uncomfortable at all.
  • Shrinkage—They didn’t shrink. They were a bit wrinkled, but the packaging says to iron on low. I’m not ironing my sheets. NOT. HAPPENING.

Queen Set: 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, and 2 pillowcases

  • General fit—I have a thicker mattress and a mattress protector, and the fitted sheet tended to slip off where I usually toss and turn, so I had to keep fixing it.
  • Softness—While these aren’t as soft out of the package as the sateen sheets I usually use, they did get softer with use and a wash.
  • Breathability—I cannot describe how utterly cool these sheets kept me… I almost felt too cold, which is a luxury in my opinion as I’m a super hot sleeper. They feel exactly as the best, crispest hotel sheets you’ve slept in.
  • Shrinkage—No shrinkage post-wash, which is lucky since they were a tad shallow, my only complaint about these amazing sheets.

Queen Set: 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, and 2 pillowcases

  • General fit—In a word, perfect!
  • Softness—These are the sheets you’ll want to keep as your go-to for your own bed and any time you have guests over. They’re soft out of the package, and only get softer with each wash.
  • Breathability—Not as breathable as linen or percale, but much more breathable than many sateen sheets I’ve tried before, nonetheless.
  • Shrinkage—I never found that these sheets shrank at all.

Queen Set: 2 pillowcases, top sheet, and fitted sheet

  • General fit—We have a pretty thick mattress, it has a pillow top, and the sheets fit great. The bottom sheet never popped up and the top tucked in nicely as well.
  • Softness—I would say they were just as soft out of the package as they were after a wash. And they continued to look new and white after the wash, they didn’t pill or discolor.
  • Breathability—No waking up with night sweats, and these sheets were really comfortable to sleep in.
  • Shrinkage—No shrinking or wrinkles. Overall, they were really great sheets.

Casper Airy Linen

Queen Set: 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, and 2 pillowcases

  • General fit—These sheets fit super well, though were tough to get on as they were stiff out of the package.
  • Softness—Okay, these are linen sheets and I knew what I was getting into. They were quite stiff and a little scratchy out of the package, so I gave ‘em a wash. They are softer with every consecutive wash, and I'm hoping they last forever for the hot NYC summers.
  • Breathability—Super breathable, while they’re not exactly cooling bed sheets, I feel like they just prevent heat from getting trapped inside the bed.
  • Shrinkage—No shrinkage here.

Buy: casper.com, $250

Queen Set: 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, and 2 pillowcases

  • General fit—These sheets are fabulously deep to accommodate my thick mattress, although I do find they bunch up a bit with extra fabric in the middle of the fitted sheet from time to time, and I just have to pull them tighter over the mattress.
  • Softness—These. Sheets. Are. So. Soft. I’ve always been a strictly cotton sheets kind of gal, but these ones made from eucalyptus fibers changed the game. I find myself looking forward to putting them back on my bed after every wash.
  • Breathability—While they’re not as breathable as percale cotton sheets, they’re definitely on par with–or maybe better than–sateen cotton.
  • Shrinkage—None whatsoever.

Queen Set: 1 flat sheet, 1 fitted sheet, and 2 standard pillowcases

  • General fit—They fit perfectly well on my mattress.
  • Softness—These are super soft, definitely comparable to the best of the best cotton sheets.
  • Breathability—They’re super breathable and they smelled fresh for at least a week. I also love that their mission is to create a more sustainable future of bedding by using bamboo instead of cotton.
  • Shrinkage—Nope, but I will say they got a bit wrinkly.

Bedding Extra: Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector

Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector

A lot of people probably think a mattress protector is a non-essential item, especially since quality sheets and mattresses cost so much to begin with. However, your mattress is something you want to have for at least five years, so think about how many germs, skin flakes, and dust particles accumulate inside the top of your mattress during that time… gross. Cover it up with a mattress protector that also keeps the night sweats at bay.
