In the time it takes to make a basic brownie, you could whip up one of these next-level bars (which your kids would call "extra"--and mean that as high praise).

  • Heat oven to 375 degrees. Coat a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan with cooking spray and line with parchment, leaving a 2-inch overhang on long sides.

  • Combine butter and 14 caramels (about 1/2 cup) in a medium saucepan. Heat over med-low, whisking until caramels soften and start to melt. Meanwhile, whisk flour, baking soda and salt.

  • Once caramels are soft, remove from heat and whisk in brown sugar. Whisk in eggs, one at a time, until blended. Whisk in flour mixture and vanilla.

  • Pour a little less than half the batter into prepared pan and bake 10 to 12 min, until set. Meanwhile, combine remaining caramels with cream in a glass bowl and microwave 1 min. Stir until smooth.

  • Once base layer is done, pour caramel mixture over top, followed by remaining batter. Bake 20 min, until set. Remove from oven and sprinkle with sea salt. Cool completely, then cut into bars. Makes 24 bars.
