The secret to this easy BBQ sauce? It's sweetened with lemon-lime soda.

  • In a saucepan, heat oil over medium. Add onion and garlic and cook until golden, about 10 minutes, stirring often. Stir in remaining sauce ingredients and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook until sauce is slightly thickened, 10 to 15 minutes, stirring often.

  • Soak 2 large handfuls of hickory chips in water for at least 30 minutes. Prepare grill for direct and indirect cooking over medium heat (350° to 450°).

  • Combine first 5 rub ingredients and mix well. Season chicken all over with rub. Brush cooking grates clean. Grill chicken, skin side down, over direct medium heat, with lid closed, until golden, 8 to 10 minutes, turning occasionally.

  • Move chicken over indirect medium heat. Drain chips, add to charcoal or to smoker box of a gas grill and continue grilling, with lid closed, for about 20 minutes. Brush chicken with a thin layer of sauce and continue grilling, with lid closed, until juices run clear and meat is no longer pink at the bone, about 15 minutes, turning and brushing occasionally with sauce. Remove chicken from grill and let rest 3 to 5 minutes. Serve warm with remaining sauce on the side. Recipe courtesy of Weber's Greatest Hits by Jamie Purviance
