The Best Store-Bought Crispy Chocolate Chip Cookies

We’d all love to bake our own homemade chocolate chip cookies. But sometimes you need a fix STAT. We tasted several brands to narrow the field to these six picks. Our tasters considered chocolate distribution and overall flavor and texture. In no particular order, we present the best mainstream chocolate chip cookies on shelves today.

These are a standout. Lines might be drawn over the milk chocolate chip variety vs the dark chocolate chip variety, but most cookie lovers will happily stand on either side of that line.

Taste tester quotes

  • “It smells like caramel. It smells amazing.”
  • “Nice salt level.”
  • “I like the meltability of the chocolate. Good chocolate flavor.”

Don’t confuse these with the Chips Deluxe Original cookie (which is fine); the Chocolate Chunk one is superior. (The delightfully candy-studded Rainbow Chips Deluxe was not eligible for our classic chocolate chip tasting.)

Taste tester quotes

  • “It does smell chocolatey.”
  • “I really like how buttery and sandy these are.”
  • “Truly a lot of chocolate with the chunks there in addition to the chips—on the top and bottom and a nice distribution throughout.”

These are mini cookies and come in a bucket, so you get a lot. But the bucket does not call out the inclusion of coconut, which could be an issue for those with allergies (or an aversion to coconut).

Taste tester quotes

  • “They smell like coconut. It’s really strong.”
  • “It lives up to the ‘crispy’ in the name.”
  • “It like it as a take on a chocolate chip cookie, but if you don’t like coconut, you shouldn’t buy this cookie.”

  • “The chocolate is very authentic. It takes crispy to the next level.”

Pepperidge Farm is hitting this list twice, because in addition to the thin and crispy Farmhouse, they make a thick and crunchy chocolate chip cookie—and it’s worth your time.

Taste tester quotes

  • “It smells like dark chocolate. You can tell it’s dark and not semisweet.”
  • “The size is nice. It’s a little oversize, but you don’t feel horrible about yourself. And because the chocolate flavor is so strong, you might need only one.”
  • “This is one where the cookie is just a matrix to hold together the chocolate.”
