The beauty world lost one of its best recently: Burt Shavitz, the bearded beekeeper and namesake behind the cult classic brand Burt’s Bees.

Becoming a beauty icon was never part of Shavitz’s life plan; he was a man who was passionate about nature and, of course, his beloved bees, their honey and the beeswax that created an eponymous lip balm. What started as a single balm in 1991 turned into a natural beauty empire, with over 160 naturally sourced products in the skin care, makeup, baby and hair care categories.

I had the incredible experience of being a part of the launch of Renewal, Burt’s Bee’s entry into the anti-aging world. Touring the headquarters down in North Carolina was so inspiring. Each and every person who works for the company clearly believed strongly in the products, natural ingredients and environmentally friendly brand as a whole. And I’ll never forget seeing the infamous bees themselves, with the queen bee housed in the same glass container, marked with a special red dot.

Shavitz will be missed but his spirit (and wild beard) will live on through his best-selling products. While it’s hard to play favorites, here are some of our must-haves from the collection.
