The Best Beauty Ingredient to Clean Your Skin and Hair
Micellar Cleansing Waters
You may have seen micellar cleansing waters in the drugstore beauty aisle—Simple and Garnier are some of our faves. Now micellar technology is expanding and for good reason: it gently yet effectively cleans both skin and hair. What exactly are these “micelles” you ask? Michelle Henry, MD, Clinical Instructor of Dermatology at Weill Cornell, explains:
A micelle is a tiny ball made of mild surfactants which remove oil and dirt when you wipe them across your skin, says Henry. They do so gently without stripping the skin’s moisture. Micellar water has been used by French women for decades to protect their skin from excessively drying tap water. In addition to the classic cleansing waters, micelles are now being used in gel cleaners, cleansing wipes, sprays and more.
Similarly, micellar shampoos act like magnets for oil, dirt and product build-up in hair, yet don’t dry out or strip hair of its natural oils. This is great for someone who wants to wash their hair every day, says Henry. Think of these like very gentle clarifying shampoos without any conditioning ingredients.
Don’t worry about overusing micellar products—most are super gentle and can be used daily. So what are you waiting for? Scroll down to see the best new micellar beauty products.
