Kyle Richards, star on Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” is no newbie when it comes to the prom. Not only has she helped three of her four daughters get ready for the big night, but she also did her own prom hair and makeup back in the 80s.

Richards has seen her daughters go through good skin days, as well as bad, and has teamed up with Clearasil to help other teens look their best for the biggest night of their adolescent lives. Richards shares her best advice for avoiding (and battling) acne on prom night.

“I actually didn’t know this before, but you can prevent acne three weeks before it appears,” says Richards. She recommends encouraging your kid to use the Clearasil Gentle Prevention Daily Clean Wash (amazon.com, $5) every day, a month before the prom night. “Prevention is key. You don’t want to wake up with a zit the morning of your prom,” explains Richards.

If your child does wake up with a pimple the morning of prom, it’s best to use a concealer that contains salicylic acid or anti-inflammatory properties (like tea tree) to treat and calm the pimple while covering it up. See a few of our favorites at the end of this slideshow.

Have confidence.

“I always tell my girls, ‘you should be getting good grades, and doing well in your extra-curriculars, but having confidence will always be the most important quality',” says Richards. “It’s the one thing that will carry you through life, and when you have confidence in yourself, others will have confidence in you.” Try to instill as much confidence as you can in your daughter or son on prom night so that they feel (and therefore look) their very best.
