A driving lesson between mother and son turned deadly after a minor crash. Smith, a 46-year-old sergeant, was the passenger of the vehicle when the accident occurred. Her son reportedly prepared to turn left from the left lane when a van cut in front of him from the wrong lane, causing the teen to collide into the van. Smith got out of the car to check for damages. According to the police report, the van's driver said, "B****, I'll kill you," pointed a gun at her and fired. Her teen son witnessed the brutal murder.

Matthew Wilks, 35, attempted to flee the scene after. He has been arrested and is awaiting homicide charges. He's accused of first-degree intentional homicide, according to local WISN 12 News. Wilks had a previous record related to drugs and possession of a firearm.

The Department of Corrections secretary-designee Kevin Carr released a statement regarding Smith's death:

"The Department of Corrections (DOC) family is mourning the tragic death of Sgt. Tracey Smith, who passed away from a senseless act of violence on Friday. Sgt. Smith courageously served Wisconsin communities for 23 years as a member of the DOC, and her contributions to the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility (MSDF) will be felt long after her passing. Today, I want to express my sincere condolences and stand in solidarity with Sgt. Smith's family, friends, and co-workers."

It's truly unbelievable that people like this exist. An innocent teen has to live the rest of his life without a mother for a senseless act. What do you think about the tragic event?
