Q. My 7-year-old often seems angry for no apparent reason and cries more than most boys his age when things don't go his way. We took him to a diagnostic center, and they said he was immature and seeking attention. Where do you think we should go from here?
A. Please don't compare him to most boys because it's way too easy to be caught up in our culture's expectations of how males "should" behave. Acting immature and seeking attention are two very different things. But his anger and crying are telling you to figure out what's going on underneath and help him with it. Take him to a counselor who can slow down his angry responses and help him sort out his feelings. Then your son will be better able to communicate in a calm way.
